Summer is here, and that means this year’s onslaught of fresh new creative students are propelled into the world of design and advertising. Their first stop is most likely at the D&AD New Blood Awards.
Hosted this year at the Truman Brewery in the heart of Shoreditch, this exhibition is a culmination of the nation’s best creative graduate talent and as you enter, you are greeted by a creative cacophony of brilliance (literally blood, sweat and tears).
For those who don’t know how it works, D&AD (Design & Art direction, go figure) facilitate briefs set by global brands and are taken on by students around the world. Students then spend months interpreting the briefs across a range of mediums and specialities and submit them for judging by the industry’s leading figures.
The work is then celebrated and displayed at the New Blood Festival. Winners are picked, and awarded one of five different coveted ‘Pencils’ or awards. (more on that here)
Most of the briefs have additional prizes on offer too, everything from brand goodies, mentorship opportunities, paid work placements, to the chance to get paid to make your idea become a reality. This year’s briefs were supplied by the likes of Adobe, Amazon, BBC, Hasbro, John Lewis, Squarespace, and The Army, to name a few.
What struck us as we walked around the exhibition was the sheer mix of work on display. A huge, diverse range of disciplines including (but not limited to) graphic design, typography, illustration, animation, advertising, packaging design, product design… there really was something to inspire everyone. It’s hard to say whether any category stood out the most but the typography was really prevalent this year and there were some particularly good advertising concepts that really took our eye.
All-in-all, really impressed with the turnout of high-quality content that rivals the industry standard, and rest assured that the future of design & art direction is safe in the hands of these bright-eyed newcomers.
