All too often, people make the mistake of treating LinkedIn like a resume site – keeping it to one page of essentials. There’s so much more that LinkedIn can offer to differentiate you from the rest of the crowd. Here are a few tips:
- Update your background photo with a custom image. You may come up with a creative way to visually share some of your work in the background, but a simple, solid background color differentiates you from other candidates applying for the same job – especially if you work in a creative industry!
- Upload files to showcase some of the projects you’ve worked on. Share links to work you’ve created. Use each role you’ve had or school you’ve attended as an opportunity to showcase different project types that may appeal to different people. Cast the net as wide as you can to show your versatility.
- Be thoughtful with your recommendations. Endorse people you’ve worked with, and ask former bosses and colleagues to endorse you as well. If their recommendation doesn’t add value to your profile, don’t accept it. (They’ll never know!)
- Don’t forget about volunteer experience. This is one of the only places to show your passions outside of work.
- Last but not least, don’t be afraid to show your personality. The bio at the top of your page can expand to include paragraphs of information. Treat this section as you would an article, with the most important facts in the first two lines since this is the only part all page visitors will see. However, make sure those first two lines give interested people a reason to want to “see more.” You have plenty of space throughout the rest of your profile to talk about work. Consider sharing information about your interests outside of work or what led to your career path. This section is an opportunity. Don’t waste it.
